Taptu for RIM Playbook is Here!

Hello Taptu fans:

Do you own a Playbook? We’re happy to let you know today that we’ve taken our popular Android / IOS app and ported it to RIM’s Playbook tablet. You can do all the same things that has made Taptu a 4.5 star app on the Android Market and a 4.5 star app on the App Store.

You can find the news sources you love by searching for RSS feeds or import them from Google Reader.

You can discover new sources through our mixed topic streams that pull in articles from a variety of news outlets and blogs. These topic streams can be found in the StreamStore, or by searching, and cover everything from food and fashion, to finance and business news, and everything in between.

Of course, you can DJ your news, a favorite feature with many of our current users. If you have five different sports streams you follow, you can merge or “DJ” these into one stream to create your own personalized sports stream. Moreover, you can color code it and name it to tailor it further.

You can also interact with your social media. You can Tweet, RT, Quote a Tweet from your Twitter stream as well as replying to someone you follow, quoting their tweets and adding your comments or retweeting directly from Taptu.

On Facebook, you can update your status, Like and Comment from your Facebook stream. If you see something a friend has sent that you want to Like or Comment on, you can do it right inside the app.

Our Playbook app is available now in BlackBerry App World. If you have a Playbook, we hope you’ll give it a try and let us know how you find it. You can download it here.

Thanks!

Taptu taps into blogosphere, creating a mutually beneficial, month-long contest that rewards the winners with a free custom news app reflective of their blog content

CAMBRIDGE, England & DENVER – (February 2, 2012) – Taptu, the social media and mobile search technology company known for “DJ-ing the news”, announces today an exciting competition, Blog App-lifier, now open to any blogger in Europe or the US. The competition is simple to enter and boasts a fantastic incentive: a custom-built news app created around the winning blogs’ content as well as any other topics of interest.

The app built for the winners will take advantage of Tapform, Taptu’s unique search-based news aggregation platform that already powers apps for The Guardian and Dutch publication De Pers. Tapform will turn any content into an interactive app that generates streams determined by specific keywords that pull information from websites, blogs and RSS.

How the Blog App-lifier contest works:

  1. Email [email protected] with contact details (name, age and email address) along with the blog name and URL.
  2. The Taptu team will send back a personalized coded bit.ly link, which will record how many recommendations you influence to download and use Taptu on your smartphone or tablet.
  3. Write a blog post and tell Taptu and your readers why you want to win and why your readers would want an app of your blog. You must use the bit.ly link to encourage your readers to add Taptu to their smartphone or tablet so your success can be tracked.
  4. Tweet a link to the blog post using @Taptu and #TaptuComp in the tweet

Full terms and conditions can be found here.

Like the large publishers already using Tapform to power their mobile experience, the winning blog will be transformed into a similar news aggregator app with highly visual streams and the option to feature related content that will appeal to their readers. The Tapform backed app will strengthen the blog as a whole and help grow readership by bringing in mobile readers.

The competition heats up today, February 2, and will end on March 30, with the winner announced on April 15.

Press Release: Maak je eigen Pers!

Persbericht

Amsterdam, 23-01-2012

Taptu Announces Dutch Publishing Giant De Pers as One of the First Customers of Its Tapform Mobile News Aggregating Platform

CAMBRIDGE, England & DENVER—(December 20, 2011)— Today, Taptu announces that respected Dutch publisher De Pers is one of the first customers of its powerful search-based news aggregation platform for mobile devices, Tapform. De Pers has chosen Taptu to power mobile experiences for their digital content because of Tapform’s superior search technology, slick interface, and unique fusion of news and social media in easy-to-read, customized streams.

Built on Taptu’s search technology, Tapform opens proprietary APIs, allowing any third party to create its own social news aggregator. Publishers can create highly visual streams around specific topics or present a filtered stream of stories based on keywords from a wide choice of sources including, but not limited to, websites, blogs and RSS.

“We are excited to announce one of the first of many partners using our Tapform product to bring their content to the mobile audience,” said Mitch Lazar, CEO of Taptu. “Working with De Pers has shown just how versatile and powerful our technology can be, and we are looking forward to bringing our know how to other publishers looking to provide a mobile experience.”

De Pers tasked Taptu with building an app that could encompass and highlight all the great content in their portfolio people have come to rely on to discover and share news.  The De Pers app features a StreamStore with all their digital properties, and the app is localized for Dutch speakers.

“De Pers has chosen to work with Taptu because of the flexibility they offer for delivery of our content,” said Jan-Jaap Heij, editor in chief of De Pers. “The Taptu platform allows us to offer De Pers content in every way imaginable. We want our readers to personalize their paper completely, and by working with Taptu this has become possible.”

Tapform provides two great advantages for publishing partners. First, working with Taptu takes the hassle and cost out of going mobile. Whereas some companies have hired developers to build mobile apps from scratch or paid hefty fees to buy news readers, Taptu provides a simple and inexpensive platform that can accommodate any digital source.

Another advantage is Taptu’s experience in mobile search and aggregation. Developed by Cambridge scientists, Taptu’s search algorithms provide the most relevant streams of content available on mobile devices. Their knowledgeable developers also provide other assistance such as localizing the De Pers app to the Dutch language.

Taptu version 2.0 updated with support for Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and new search-based streams for the most topical news reading experience on mobile

CAMBRIDGE, England & DENVER—(November 17, 2011)—Taptu, the social media and mobile search technology company, is announcing version 2.0 of its popular social news reader app for Android phones and tablets with support for Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and a unique new feature that lets users turn any keyword into a contextual stream of news.

“Taptu 2.0 is the most visually appealing and useful way to find and consume content on Android devices, especially tablets,” said Mitch Lazar, CEO of Taptu. “The new app marks the launch of Endless Mixtape search-based streams, a feature unique to Taptu born out of our search algorithms and heritage that allows users to customize their news and information experience more than any other app of its kind.”

In addition to a more beautiful and easy to use interface, Taptu version 2.0 introduces Endless Mixtape streams that use search technology to create targeted streams for any topic.

Taptu is best known for letting users DJ the news by mixing and matching different publications, blogs, RSS and social media feeds to create customized streams of social news content. With version 2.0, users can now take customization to a whole new level by creating tailored streams based on a specific keyword search or by filtering existing streams to only include stories that pertain to a specific keyword or topic.

For example, Lady Gaga fans can go to the SteamStore and use this new feature to create a “Lady Gaga” Endless Mixtape stream. The stream would glean all stories featuring or mentioning Lady Gaga from Taptu’s curated Music, Fashion and Celebrity streams as well as their immense collection of publications, blogs, RSS and social media feeds. Similarly, sports fans who mix and mash up college football news, could create an Endless Mixtape Taptu stream of Florida Gators, to capture just the news about their favorite team from a mashed up college football stream. Endless Mixtape streams allow users to have stories and social media content pertaining to specific people, products, places, events, teams and topics delivered to them in real time.

Android users can also use search to dig into streams they already follow, such as Taptu Technology Stream, and filter out just the stories related to a particular subject such as “Android” or “Ice Cream Sandwich.”

Other features on Taptu 2.0 for Android include scrollable widgets, giving users the power to bring their favorite streams right to the homepage of their Android phone or tablet. Scrollable widgets also allow the user to flick through the top stories for each stream before having to actually open the app.

From the biggest news of the week to stories that cater to individual passions and specialized interests, Taptu allows users to keep news, blogs and social feeds organized in a clean and intuitive design. The company’s search engine heritage allows Taptu to go beyond simple RSS feeds by actually recommending sources and enabling consumers to discover new content. Taptu’s search expertise and algorithms also eliminates duplicate stories to ensure that users don’t see the same story over and over.

Tapform allows developers, publishers and hardware manufacturers to harness the power of the Taptu news-aggregating engine

CAMBRIDGE, England & DENVER — September 8, 2011 — Today Taptu, the social media and mobile search technology company, is announcing it has received €2.5 million Euros ($3.5 million US dollars) to expand its product offering beyond its well-known social news reader app available on iOS and Android. The funding comes from DFJ Esprit and Sofinnova, who see Taptu’s B2B solution as the next big opportunity in the digital publishing space.

Taptu will use the funding to build Tapform, a new offering that will provide tools for developers, publishers and hardware manufacturers to easily create their own personalized social news aggregator. Tapform also adds to existing products by aggregating content that increases customer engagement and by providing another potential source of advertising revenue.

“Taptu has set itself apart from other newsreaders by using its search capability to give users the power to discover and tailor the news they want, and to personalize the experience by letting them DJ and mix streams in ways that make sense to them,” says CEO Mitch Lazar. “With Tapform we are opening our technology, allowing other companies and media entities to incorporate features that make Taptu a hit.”

Built on Taptu’s proprietary search technology, Tapform will open up APIs that are currently available only on Taptu’s apps, allowing any third party to create its own social news aggregator. Publishers can create highly visual streams around specific topics or present a filtered stream of stories based on keywords from a wide choice of sources including, but not limited to, websites, blogs and RSS. For example, a newspaper with an award-winning news section and blogs could create an app on that specific topic, creating streams of its own content, as well as bringing in additional content from other providers. Or, magazine publishers or blog owners with several titles could offer all of their properties in one place.

Taptu will also continue to deliver new innovation around its Android and iOS apps, adding additional content and features, including video, keyword-based search streams and user accounts. The company also plans to develop a HTML5 Web version of the product to widen the availability of the service and to offer customers a seamless reading experience across the desktop Internet and the mobile Web.
