Our CEO Mitch has just written an article on how publishers can take advantage of tablets that has just been published on Forbes.com. It’s no secret that reading habits are shifting: Pew Research Center reports that 29% of all U.S. adults already own a tablet or e-reader, thanks to a massive holiday gift-giving push. EMarketer estimates that in 2011 U.S. adults spent 65 minutes consuming mobile content, compared to just 18 minutes on print magazines and 26 minutes on newspapers. As the revolution continues to get digitized, Mitch writes there are four essential rules that publishers need to follow if they plan to compete:

1. On tablets, news is absorbed through personalized streams and flicks. Apps are the new content search experience.
2. Publishers will try to build their own mobile platforms. But platforms already exist to serve them.
3. Syndicate or die.
4. A new revenue model needs to emerge for the tablet revolution.

In a vile excuse to get out of Valentine’s Day responsibilities, the male contingents of the Taptu management team are once again sneaking off next week to the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. Mitch our CEO, Konstantinos our product head, and Bob, our commercial development head are the guilty trio. If you’re interested in getting in touch, I’m sure they’ll dig deep for a drink or two, but flowers are unlikely.

Just email… Mitch.Lazar (at) Taptu.com; Konstantinos.Papamiltiadis (at) taptu.com; bob.last (at) Taptu.com.

Mitch will also be speaking on a panel looking at the challenges that the media industry is going through as they get to grips with the digital world. Specifically, they’ll be discussing the business models behind mPublishing, the impact of advertising and the argument of paid versus free content. They will also be looking at the role of the apps and tablets within mobile media, and conclude with demonstrations of some of the latest start ups/ technologies in the space.

Mitch, who will be speaking on the business models part of the panel, will be joined by execs from Time Inc, France Telecom, and Pearson to name a few, in what should be an interesting session given the recent launch of News Corp’s The Daily, Ongo from a consortium of backers including the New York Times and the Washington Post, and Livestand from Yahoo (aka Mitch’s former bosses). Please join them on 16 February 2011, Wednesday, 2:00-3:30 in Hall 5.

Finally, we’ve also created a Mobile World Congress stream to keep you abreast of the latest news from the conference. You can add it by going to the Stream Store in My Taptu and adding Mobile World Congress located on the featured first page.

Announcing Mitch Lazar As Taptu's New CEO

Now that 33 miners are safely on the surface, and Arnie has left London (will he be back?) it’s time for some Taptu news. In case you have a life, you may not have heard that Mitch Lazar is now our new CEO!

Here’s what Mitch said without even taking a breath…

“I’m excited to step into the role of CEO at Taptu and take the reigns from Steve Ives who has done an incredible job building Taptu into what it is today.

Steve has founded Taptu four years ago with a brand new vision for mobile search. Today the Taptu touchscreen search app achieves a stellar four-star user rating and in addition, our Wapaedia product provides millions of our customers an encyclopedia of content that is fun and informing to use.

Since joining the company four months ago, we have been re-organising Taptu to make more of, IMHO, our fortunate position of having some of the best, brightest and most talented engineers in this space. And did you know we have an editorial team? It gives us an added advantage and X-factor to keep our products fresh and brutally relevant for our customers. Our understanding of the content and search business as well as the search tech Taptu has built forms a great base from which we can continue to grow.

So what is next from the innards of Taptu Towers? Well we are on to something very new that we think is going to be seriously addictive, something we expect will provide our customers with a richer experience that will compel them to use our service every single day, many times!

To give you more of a clue, as our digital industry has transformed the way in which we consume information, we are most interested in how people will engage with their favorite content and follow their passions, while staying connected to their friends and communities. Think of Taptu as a social and media technology company that wants to keep you engaged with your world and the world around you in one beautiful little app.

I look forward to driving our business forward and taking Taptu to new heights with a service millions of people will love to use everyday”.

There you have it – Mitch keeps us up and awake at night and we have an addictive product coming that will do the same for you – I’d say Mitch also has the X-Factor
